What makes a project ready for a client?

A demonstration proves that something can work. A useful handover shows what it is intended to do, how it behaves when something goes wrong and how another person can operate it. This distinction helps a learner prepare for supervised business projects.

Start with a short brief. Name the user, the task and the result they need. For an enquiry form, the result is not simply a green success message: the correct team must receive the enquiry, with enough information to respond. Write acceptance criteria that can be checked.

Build the smallest complete journey. Include validation, a sensible error state and confirmation of what happened. Use sample data while learning. Never copy a client database into a practice project to make it look realistic.

Test beyond the happy path. Try missing fields, repeated submissions, long names, a slow network and keyboard navigation. Record which checks passed, what failed and what you changed. A clear bug report helps a reviewer reproduce the problem.

Make the work reviewable. Keep changes small, explain important decisions and identify code or content produced with AI assistance. Run suggested code and check its behaviour yourself. Be ready to explain permissions, secrets and the information the application handles.

Prepare a handover that another learner can follow. Include setup steps, configuration requirements, test instructions, known limitations and a short user guide. Keep passwords and keys out of the repository. Identify who can approve deployment and how to recover if it goes wrong.

For your portfolio, describe your actual contribution and get permission before publishing client names, screenshots or data. An honest small project with clear tests is more useful evidence than a large application you cannot explain.
